Hi and Welcome to My Page!I've been in Cuba Township for many years. I grew up in North Barrington and attended what was called P.S. 89, now known as North Barrington School. I have a brick in my Law Office from the Principals Office in the torn down school; I spent a lot of time in that office. Anyway, other than time in the US Army during 1966 to 1972, I have lived in Cuba Township since the mid 50's. I graduated from Loyola University in 1975 and the John Marshall Law School in 1978. I've practiced Law here in Lake County since then and served as the Township Attorney from 1983 till 2000. In 2000, the desire to be back in boots and jeans overcame me and I became the Cuba Township Highway Commissioner. I have also served as the Chairman of the Lake Barrington Zoning Board of Appeals and the President of the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. I have always believed that Service to your country and community is a duty of citizenship. There is no place quite like Cuba Township, I am proud to serve. Many wonder how a lawyer can do this job. I hold a Commercial Drivers License and can operate and do operate any truck or piece of equipment we own here. I put in excess of forty hours a week and plow snow regularly with the rest of the guys in a big truck; I am pretty proud of that. During the past ten years, we have brought the Road District to a fully functioning regional Public Works Facility unlike any in the state. We have adopted the idea of regionalization of public works services and Intergovernmental Agreements and evolved into a governmental entity that has reduced the cost of road services throughout the greater Barrington area. You can read a lot more about this elsewhere on this site under Road District Services. You can click on this link to see "Historical Facts about Cuba Township" to learn more about it's history. I would have preferred it to read "Rockin history about Cuba," but was out voted here in the office. I like writing about history but in style different than most. Like, does "Thaddeus Wofington Settled on Cuba Road in 1875," sound interesting? How about this? When we did a major road rebuild in 2005 of Cuba Road, we discovered two interesting things: empty whiskey bottles dating back to the 1800s and actual wagon wheel ruts in the dirt in the original Cuba Road. It caused me to think of drunken farmers heading to the milk/whistle stop (called Cuba Station) on the rail head which used to exit near West Cuba Road and Plum Tree Road. See what I mean? History with a kick! Did you know that the farmhouse which we now occupy for offices was once a boarding house for a nearby cheese factory? Probably not real interested either. Nevertheless, pretty cheesy. Follow the Link, I am going to keep adding snippets of local lore.........including the suggestion that no one really has any accurate idea of how the name of the Township came about, as well as various historical facts with which you can amaze your friends, neighbors and particularly your teenage children, who will undoubtedly be attentive and fascinated. |
